Old generation laptops are not equipped with Wi-Fi adapter, mostly. But today Wi-Fi adapter is typically embedded into the motherboard of the laptops (actually inserted into the mini PCI slot). And many desktop computers are not equipped with Wi-Fi adapter except the branded ones. Wireless USB adapter is the easiest adapter to install to either desktop or laptop computers. Just insert the adapter into the available USB port, install the driver and you can easily connect to the network wirelessly. On the other hand you need to open the computer case when you need to install the wireless PCI adapter into the desktop computer, not the laptops.
