The easiest way to build a wireless network in home with your Cable broadband services is by installing an all-in-one device which combines the function of wireless router and cable modem. Why? You just require a single device instead of two which is normally you do with modem plus a wireless router. You just need to plug-in the cable lines to the modem and start configuration, just single device using all-in-one cable modem router.
All-in-one Cable modem router devices are not available in the market as many as those ADSL modem router devices. The following paragraphs show you couple of cable modem wireless routers you can consider for replacing your aging modem provided by your ISP.
Motorola Surfboard SBG900
The first generation of wireless cable modem router introduced by Motorola is the Docsis 2.0 SBG900, ideal solution for home users for simple networking tasks including internet browsing, sharing documents and internet downloading.
Main features:
- Powered by legacy wireless g (802.11g) standard
- Network coverage up to 300 ft indoor and longer distance coverage for outdoor up to 1300ft.
- Support legacy wireless security 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption
- You can share up to 253 users in single subnet network. You will not have that many users in home right?
Cons:
- Low speed of standard wireless G. You cannot optimize the data rate throughput of your high speed wireless N clients
- Supports only single Ethernet port for single Ethernet-base device only
Should you demand high speed environment to support your home theater devices, you need to upgrade to SBG6580.
Motorola Surfboard SBG6580
The SBG6580 wireless cable modem is the newer generation of Motorola cable modem router with built-in wireless access point. The main differences with SBG900 are cable technology, the wireless technology and the number of Ethernet ports.
Main features:
- DOCSIS 3.0 cable technology enabling the channel bonding up to 8 downstream and 4 upstream channels, ideal for multimedia services up to 300Mbps Docsis 3 (and up to 400Mbps EuroDocsis) for downstream and up to 100Mbps upstream
- Wireless N technology with selectable dual band, you can select the operating band of the router in either 2.4GHz or 5GHz band
- Includes four gigabit Ethernet ports – fast lane wired connection to your gigabit-enable device for maximum data rate throughput
Cons:
- Selectable dual band, you cannot accommodate your mix wireless clients which operate in either 2.4GHz or 5GHz band in a time.
With this high speed modem, you can deploy multi-port wireless bridge (such as DAP-1513 selectable dual band) to connect multiple Ethernet devices including XBOX game console, Internet HDTV, and Blu-Ray player.
Netgear CMD31T Cable Modem
The Netgear CMD31T/ CME31T is not for consumers but for service providers, and is not a cable modem router. It’s a cable modem only device which must be connected to a wireless router for building a wireless network in homes. Connect the Ethernet port of the modem to your wireless router’s WAN port.
Main features: DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with data rate throughput downstream up to 152MBs / 200Mbps (Docis / Eurodocsis) and up to 108Mbps upstream. Downstream is slower than the SBG6580 modem. The modem includes one Gigabit Ethernet port you can connect to any new generations of wireless N600 routers with gigabit Ethernet WAN port such as Buffalo Wzr-Hp-Ag300H wireless N600 high power router or you may consider the ultimate speed and range of WNDR4500 N900 router by Netgear.
