Compared with other Motorola cable modem products that always get a very positive responses in the market, this wireless gateway modem is getting less encouraging responses from the customers. With a rating average of 3.5 out of 5 stars customer rating, this rating result is less satisfactory according to customers perspective. Even those users that gave 1 star rating nearly half of those who give 5 stars rating.
The design of the Surfboard SBG6580 model is almost the same as other Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem: SB6120 and SB6141 like a box with vertical form factor, black and look rigid less artistic than its predecessor SB5101.
As with the other all-in-one devices, the Motorola SBG6580 has been able to meet all your needs for a Wi-Fi network either at home or for a small office. No need to bother choosing a cable modem, wireless router and 4-port switch to build a wifi network, just one device for all your requirements, it is practical, economical and easy installation and maintenance.
Cable Modem Function
Motorola SBG6580 is based on DOCSIS 3.0 standard technology with cable provider infrastructure that also supports DOCSIS 3, the download speed can be up to 300Mbps and even 400Mbps with EuroDOCSIS-base to get channel bonding up to 8, while the downstream can be up to 100Mbps. This is ideal for streaming video or other multimedia services.
Firewall / Router Function
For the novice users in networking, you probably never thought that your Surfboard SBG6580 is equipped with standard protection against all threats from the Internet with a feature called NAT and SPI. NAT serves to disguise the IP address of your private network so it is not visible from the internet. Likewise SPI helps scanning incoming traffic from the Internet more thoroughly if it contains intruders.
The router includes the DoS (Denial of Services) and malware protection. The modem also supports the routing function including static route and dynamic routing (RIPv1, RIPv2). This is the second requirement for your network.
The Motorola SBG6580 cable modem wireless router is powered by the latest wireless 802.11n technology with dual band support.
Do not expect all of your wireless clients that operate in either 2.4GHz or 5GHz can be accommodated by this router simultaneously. Unfortunately it is a selectable dual band, not simultaneous. It means that the router will operate in single band in a time either in 2.4GHz or 5GHz band.
If you expect the router to accommodate all the devices for example your iPad, 5GHz-based XBOX adapter, your notebook with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi adapter and other smart-phones, you’ll be sorry. This Surfboard modem gateway can only work in single band either in 2.4GHz (for your smart-phones, notebook with 2.4GHz band Wi-Fi) or 5GHz (for iPad, XBOX adapter with 5GHz band) band. If you have uniform wireless adapters that support 5GHz band, that’ll be great for maximum data throughput.
The modem includes 4xGigabit Ethernet ports to let you connect up to computers with 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports. Brand new computers today are equipped with gigabit Ethernet ports you can connect to the routers using the Cat5e UTP cable for reliable wired connections.
To provide the IP address configuration automatically, the modem includes a DHCP server that will provide IP address leases to the clients on the network. This will help you reduce the network administration overhead.
Wireless connection is prone to the eavesdropping by the users within the network coverage. Therefore you need to encrypt the connection by the industrial wireless security WPA/WPA2 (Wireless Protected Access). The Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem wireless router supports wide range of security including WEP-64/128, WPA-PSK, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES, 802.1x, 802.11i (pre-authentication). For secure client connection to the network, the device supports user-friendly Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) to easily connect with WPS compatible device.
The connection / setting up networking diagram for mostly all-in-one devices (wireless cable / DSL modem router) such as Surfboard Sbg6580 are similar as shown in the following figure; you need to connect the coaxial cable to the coax port of the modem and some configuration steps to follow.
Should you need to connect your entertainment devices such as XBOX console, Blu-Ray, internet HDTV etc you may consider the multiport wireless bridging device such as Linksys WES610N.
Cons and Pros
- docsis 3.0 / eurodocsis 3.0 ready
- dual band support with solid speed
- 4x gigabit Ethernet ports
- Customer ratings in Amazon (1-5 stars): 4.2 for wireless speed, 4.5 for indicator and appearence
- Doesn’t support simultaneous dual band – you have only three options in basic wireless setup: Enabled 2.4GHz; Enabled 5 GHz; and Disabled.
- no USB port for shared storage
If you already have a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem Surfboard SB6120 or 6121 for example, then keep it and just add a gigabit wireless router that is still popular, powerful and economical DIR-655 wireless router.
