The reader is tricked into opening the attachment because they believe it has originated from a secure source. In fact, the password protected attachment contained a worm.
As you can see it is easy to be tricked. All you can do is to be wary and diligent when you receive emails containing attachments or even links to various sites when you are not expecting them.
