Traditional broadband internet connections use Cable or ADSL internet services for homes and small offices. These types of broadband services are not appropriate for mobile purposes situation. You cannot have internet connection in areas where Cable or ADSL services are not available. What This Product Does

CTR500 Cradlepoint is a 3g-4g mobile broadband travel router which allows you to create Wi-Fi network from broadband USB, ExpressCard or Ethernet modem. It’s a simple router to use which is designed to be a plug-n-play solution. You just need to connect your activated USB or ExpressCard modem and turn the unit on and instantly you can create a secure Wi-Fi network. The wireless coverage can be up to 150 ft and allows you connect up to 32 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

When your primary service is restored, it will automatically re-connect.

CTR500 is designed to be operational instantly right-out-of-the box with minimal setup and maintenance for the simplicity. Powered by WiPipe technology and high-security features including WPA/WPA2 (Personal & Enterprise) and built-in firewall, with no additional software to load, the network will be up and running in minutes.

Setup and Configuration

Setting up the Wi-Fi internet connection using 3g network is similar to setting-up home wireless router. There are two ways you can setup wireless network connection using CTR500 Cradlepoint router.

Wired Connection using Cable/DSL Internet Service

Connect power and insert one end of your Ethernet cable to the WAN port. Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable into your Internet service provider’s modem. It may take a minute or two for the CTR500 to initialize. Open your web browser. You can now access the Internet.

Wireless Setup using a Mobile Broadband (cellular) Data Modem

Connect Power Supply and insert active USB or ExpressCard modem. Then, establish a wireless internet connection as shown below.

Unlike DSL/Cable Internet which you need a Cable / DSL modem connect to central office using local loop wired, creating Wi-Fi network using 3g network service you need PC-card or ExpressCard 3g modem. Some laptops are now shipping with these modems built in. Until now, users needed to purchase additional modem devices to insert into their PDAs or laptops.

3G networks like EV-DO use cellular networks that span large geographical areas around cities and highways. Coverage is more seamless and uniform in urban and trafficked areas for this reason. The providers’ cell towers deliver the network connectivity in most of the areas where cell phone voice service is available. The two 3G technology leaders are Verizon and Cingular/AT&T.

Like Cradlepoint, D-Link also ships the 3g cellular router DIR-450/451. DIR-450 includes USB and CardBus slot you can use for Internet adapter connection and supports 1xEV-DO services. But for DIR-451 supports only Cardbus slot and supports UMTS/HSDPA.
