D-Link DIR-645 N300 whole home router 1000 with smart beam amplify – comprehensive whole-home coverage.
D-Link introduces many types of high performance wireless routers which are designed specifically to support home theater environment. Let’s say DIR-657 HD Media router 1000 to let you stream multiple media content – videos, music and more to multiple devices all at the same time, lag-free. Or say the Wi-Fi Booster DAP-1525 with smart beam antenna technology to extend the range to deliver the seamless HD video streams and online gaming applications. And this one, the D-Link DIR-645 N300 whole home router 1000 which is a home theater router with Smart-Beam technology for solid connection to home theater devices.
What this Product Does
The DIR-645 is powered by the latest wireless 802.11n technology and is only backward compatible with 802.11g. It doesn’t support legacy 802.11b anymore, it’s designed for future technology.
Smart-Beam Technology
The DIR-645 is like other home N300 routers with single 2.4GHz band which is powered by 6 multidirectional internal antennas with Smart-beam technology. Smart-beam technology finds and tracks individual devices and then focuses the beams of bandwidth to the devices. It’s like find the target and lock it in flight simulator game. With the addition of advanced Quality of Services bandwidth prioritization engine, you can stream HD video, gaming and VoIP calling without lags and glitches. This way you can roam around your home with solid connection, no signal dropping and eliminating the dead zones. This router is ideal for large home networks.
Gigabit Ports
Like other high performance N600 or N750 routers, this DIR-645 is equipped with 4x gigabit Ethernet ports for wired connection to the network using Cat5e twisted cable. Wired connection is reliable and high speed connection to the network with gigabit speed – ideal for large huge data file transfer, streaming HD videos or wired gaming.
USB Port
DIR-645 whole home router-1000 includes one USB port with SharePort™ Plus technology. Unlike other media streaming routers such as new Linksys E4200 N750 or Netgear WNDR4000 N750 routers which can only let you host shared storage, the DIR-645 lets you host either shared printer or shared storage. You can also use the USB port for Windows Connect Now (WCN) to let you configure any Windows client computers that don’t support WPS-enabled device. And the good thing is that it also includes SharePort App for Android® and iPhone® OS for online gaming.
Regarding the USB port, you can compare with Asus RT-N56U N600 Black Diamond which supports two USB 2.0 ports. With two USB ports you don’t need to purchase separate print-server device for shared printer and you still can use the other USB port for shared storage.
You can also consider router with two USB ports the Belkin N750 DB which is also powered by Multi-Beam technology.
Advanced Security
To protect your wireless connection to the network, the DIR-645 supports the latest Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) with AES 128bit encryption. Clients with WPS-enabled devices can also easily connect to the network by pressing the WPS button and also PIN. Hiding your internal network from the public network can be done with NAT and threat protections with SPI. VPN pass-through with multi-session PPTP, L2TP and IPSec is also supported. It’s not native VPN actually.
Pros:
- solid connection with multi-beam technology
- Gigabit Ethernet ports
- USB for either shared storage or shared printer
- IPV6 support
Cons:
- Single band only, doesn’t support dual band
Dir-645 Vs Dir-655
What is the difference between Dir-645 whole home router 1000 and Dir-655? It lies on the antennas design. Dir-655 is designed with three external antennas while Dir-645 is designed with 6x multi-directional internal antennas with Smartbeam technology for solid connection. Due to its popularity, new Dir-655 is continually upgraded to support current wireless technology such as ratified 802.11n (originally was draft 802.11n) and doesn’t support 802.11b anymore. All other features are the same including the gigabit ports, USB functionality and security features.
Connection Diagram

You can setup the router with the connection diagram as shows in the figure above. The router WAN port connects to the Ethernet port of the broadband modem either cable or DSL. Any home theater devices can be connected wirelessly by installing the adapter such as WNCE2001 universal internet adapter, or if you need to connect multiple devices to the internet you can consider the Airstation WLI-TX4-AG300N with four Ethernet ports.
