Overview
Building a wireless network in home is getting easier by using the all-in-one device – wireless DSL router (for DSL broadband internet) or wireless Cable router. All-in-one devices include all the requirements to build a wireless network: the modem, the router/firewall, the switch, and the wireless access point.
The advantage of having an all-in-one device (such as wireless DSL router) is that you don’t need to purchase separate devices like traditionally you build a wireless network to share the broadband internet. Setting up the network is easier and you just need to configure a single device rather than multiple devices. However, with an all-in-one device – you have a single point of failure.
DGN3500 Vs TEW-635BRM
There are many wireless DSL routers available in the market you can purchase; two of them are TEW-635BRM 300Mbps by Trendnet and DGN3500 N300 by Netgear. Both routers as general have the same features such as wireless router with built-in DSL modem; engineered based on the latest wireless 802.11n technology; and backward compatible with legacy 802.11b/g. But actually they have some different features as shown in the table below.
Interfaces
DGN3500 is embedded with Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed wired connection. Gigabit Ethernet ports are ideal for large file data transfers and fast response multiplayer gaming. TEW-635 doesn’t include a USB port, but DGN3500 does. With ReadyShare technology, you can attach a USB drive to provide fast and easy shared access.

Security features
DGN3500 wireless DSL router includes more comprehensive security features including the Intrusion detection and prevention (IDS), Denial-of-service (DoS) attack prevention, and Exposed host (DMZ) for secure gaming. Both routers support multiple SSIDs (aka Guest secure access) to allow you create security boundary for your guests separate from your private network. For wireless security, the TEW-635 supports RADIUS infrastructure for authentication which is suitable for corporate networks.
Operating modes
The good thing with TEW-635 is that it supports two different modes: router plus modem, and modem only mode. If currently you have a high-performance dual-band gigabit router (such as TEW-673GRU with 2 USB ports, or WNDR37AV wireless router for gaming and video) you can configure the TEW635 in modem only mode to support the wireless routers.
TEW-635 wireless DSL router also supports UPnP and ALG. Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Application Level Gateway (ALG) support for Internet applications such as e-mail, FTP, gaming, remote desktop, Net Meeting and telnet. This modem is suitable for your small offices or homes.
