DOCSIS 3 was originally released in August 2006 to support IPv6 and to revise to significantly increase transmissions speeds (both upstream and downstream) besides its original version (DOCSIS 2.0) that was revised for enhanced upstream transmission speed to support the IP telephony.
As frequency allocation band plans differ between U.S. and European CATV systems, DOCSIS standards have been modified for use in Europe which is under the name of “EuroDOCSIS”. Mostly Cable modems are designed to comply with both DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS. Even though not all the Cable providers are upgraded their technology with the current DOCSIS 3, they still can use the DOCSIS 3 modems which are backward compatible with the DOCSIS 2.0 or DOCSIS 1.0.
The following are some of the Cable modems which are designed with the DOCSIS 3 technology and also backward compatible with the previous DOCSIS version.
SURFboard SB6120 supports all DOCSIS 3 features including channel bonding, IPv6, and Advanced encryption feature.
- Both DOCSIS 3 and Euro-DOCSIS 3 certified
- Channel bonding of up to 4 downstream channels to allow data rates increased of well over 100 Mbps in each direction
- Besides supports current IPv4, this DOCSIS 3 based modem also support the next generation of IPv6 addressing system to expand network addressing capabilities in the future.
- For VPN tunneling purposes, this DOCSIS 3 modem supports AES traffic encryption for security enhancement.
- Enhanced network management
- Ability to provision and manage IP multicast to allow video conference application
- To expand the wired network using Giga Switch, you can utilize the Gigabit data port (with auto negotiate and auto MDIX – no need of cross UTP cable)
- To allow easy troubleshooting, this DOCSIS 3 modem is equipped with front panel LEDs status
- User-friendly online diagnostics
- The ISP can easily manage, monitor and configure remotely using SNMP and TFTP
With the above outstanding features, SURFboard SB6120 DOCSIS 3 Cable modem can provide the high-speed internet access for residential user, SOHO, or even for business and enterprise corporate network. See also SURFboard SBG900 Cable modem wireless and SURFboard 5120 a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem.
