HWRN2 Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Router

Like other wireless routers with 802.11n final version, Hawking Tech also introduces HWRN2 Hi-gain wireless N300 router. The router delivers the speed of up to 300Mbps and claimed to reach longer distance – up to 5 times as far as Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (Source: Independent research group).

HWRN2 N300 router is powered by 802.11n with Hi-gain technology to provide longer distance range and is backward compatible with other wireless –b/g devices. The router includes two 3dBi Dipole Hi-Gain™ Antennas (with 2 x Dedicated RJ-SMA Antenna Ports) which are removable to allow you replace the included antennas with other Hawking Hi-Gain Wi-Fi range extending antenna.

The HWRN2 includes 4 port 10/100Mbps Autosensing Hub. I can’t believe that Hawking Tech embeds Hub as written in the product’s spec, not Switch like other wireless routers. With Hub, the four ports share the same single bus and collision domain. We know that Ethernet Hubs are considered to be legacy devices which cannot utilize LAN bandwidth efficiently. Fortunately the router is designed mainly for wireless connection, and 4 Ethernet ports Hub should not be used for extending more wired connection by adding more Switch.

For wireless security, the HWRN2 N300 router supports 64/128-bit WEP Data Encryption, WPA-PSK; (TKIP, AES), WPA2-PSK (TKIP, AES), and Radius Server. With Radius support, the router supports deployment in corporate environment which has Radius server for their authentication and authorization. But for corporate environment which concerns about high-security environment, deployment business class wireless access points such as Sonicwall SonicPoint should be considered. SonicPoint supports dual-band wireless with business class features including WPA/WPA2, SSL VPN, Wireless Intrusion Detection Services (WIDS), wireless firewalling, secure Layer 3 wireless roaming, and integrated Wireless Guest Services (WGS).

HWRN2 N300 router doesn’t include USB port to allow you share a printer or an external storage. Should you require sharing your printer across the network, you need to purchase separate print-server such as HWPS12UG Hawking Print Server which includes 2 USB ports and one parallel port. But this is too much for home networks, but it’s Ok for offices.

Should you build a wireless environment in homes which includes the printer to share, consider any types wireless routers with print server, such as DIR-632 by D-Link or Belkin N600 HD router. DIR-632 includes 8-port 10/100Mbps LAN Switch and one USB port for share printer. While Belkin N600 HD includes 2 USB ports to let you share the printer and storage.

HWRN2 networking diagram with print server

The figure shows HWRN2 N300 router networking diagram where two computers connect using wired connection to the router and Hawking wireless print server is used to share 3 printers (2 USB printers and one parallel printer). Connect the modem (either Cable or ADSL) Ethernet port using the network cable to the WAN port of the router.

HWRN2 N300 router is High-gain wireless router to provide high=speed and longer distance network coverage for your large home.
