How do you configure this CM100 Cable Modem connection? It’s quite easy, if the modem connects direct to a single computer – connect using USB port. Insert the installation CD into the CD drive and follow easy installation wizard that supports Windows 98SE/ 2000/Me /XP. Basically you need to make one phone call to the ISP for one time cable modem connection setup to the ISP.

What if you would like to share the broadband internet connection to some computers in the household wirelessly and securely? You need to buy a wireless router with firewall feature (typically with NAT and SPI features) such as Linksys WRT610N wireless router which is powered by the future technology draft 2.0 802.11n standards.

Connect the WAN RJ-45 port of the router to the RJ-45 port of the Cable modem with included UTP cable. If the ISP supports the dynamic IP assignment, you need to make sure that the WAN port of the router is set to DHCP clients. Typically the router is DHCP enabled both as client and server, so if you know nothing about DHCP services – just leave the default setting.

With the DHCP services enabled, you don’t to worry how to manage the IP address assignments to the computers on the network. The IP address configuration for the client computers will be set automatically as long as your computers TCP/IP property is set to “obtain the IP address automatically”.
