The Linksys WRT54 was so popular at that time when draft 802.11n-based router was not introduced into the market. WRT54G2 is the next generation of this series with enhanced features including security.
Main features:
- Wireless G access point
- Built-in four-port fast Ethernet switch
- High performance router with firewall
With this wireless G router, currently the retail price is still expensive if compared with other available wireless N router with the same price. Wireless G WRT54 series delivers the maximum speed up to 54Mbps. Should you require a standard router for your home to perform a simple network task such as sharing internet connection and file sharing or printing, I believe that you won’t purchase the old generation of WRT54 series but the new router with the latest wireless technology.
A four-port switch, a wireless G access point and router / firewall function integrated into a single device was so great at that time. But today, with the same retail price you can get more powerful speed almost three times as fast as this WRT54 router. Linksys E1200 is one of the new generations of Linksys E series you may consider for replacing your aging WRT54G2 router. The retail price is almost the same but you will get much better performance than your aging one.
What you get with Linksys E1200 router
- Powered by new generation of wireless N technology with high speed of 300Mbps. This means you have the speed of up to five times as fast as your aging WRT54G router
- Powered by MIMO antenna technology for better speed and range
- Include four-port 10/100Mbps switch – the same as your WRT54G router
- Support latest wireless security encryption WPA/WPA2
- Support guest network that will protect your visitors from accessing your private network resources. You cannot perform that on your aging WRT54G router
- You can do anything you want with Cisco Connect software that will help you configure and setting up your router to perform the networking tasks easily

Connect the router to the modem to share the internet connection and share files, music, and add a wireless print server to let you share the printer across the network. Both routers doesn’t support USB port for sharing the storage or share the printer. Only the new generation of Linksys wireless router E4200V2 is declared to be capable of hosting a share printer.
There are many high performance wireless routers that include two USB ports such as Netgear WNDR4500 N900 router or new AsusRT-N56U. With two USB ports you can share both external storage and printer together.
