Share the Internet

Originally people used dial-up internet in home to get access to the internet by using the existing phone line to the ISP. It was long years ago when the broadband internet services were not widely established like it is today. Sharing a single dial-up connection with many computers was a pain by using the “Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)” in windows workgroup network. Moreover, dial-up connection was very expensive at that time and yet the bandwidth was limited up to 56Kbps. Today, you can signup broadband internet connection with affordable monthly price and offers high bandwidth, 384Kbps, 1Mbps or even more.

Sharing the broadband internet is easy with the abundance of the availability of the broadband routers in the market. Router is the heart of the network you require in building the network for sharing the broadband internet connection with several computers in home. The most popular network today is the wireless network to allow your computers with Wi-Fi adapter connect wirelessly to the network to access the internet.

The figure 1 is the general diagram of home wireless network with the wireless router as the heart of the network. The wireless router (WAN port) connects to the modem (Ethernet port) either Cable or ADSL modem using the Cat5(e) UTP Cross cable. Some types of wireless routers support the USB port that let you share the storage across the network. And some can also be used to share the printer on the network.
