New Belkin N450 High Performance Router with multi-beam technology delivering powerful signal strength and longer distance coverage. How do is it compared with other N450 routers?
Like Linksys who ships new E series (E3200, E2500, E1500 and E1200) to refresh it’s previous E series (E3000, E200 and E1000), Belkin also ships new lines of wireless routers covering all the wireless technologies including N150, N300, N450, N600 and N750 refreshing the previous series. All the new series are designed with oval shape, rounded in the edges.
What this Product Does
Belkin N450 is compliant with 802.11n technology with single 2.4GHz band and is compatible with 802.11b/g standard devices delivering the maximum speed up to 450Mbps (ideal physical connection). The router is powered by the Multi-beam technology (3 internal antennas, it is like three-spatial streaming antenna) for better signal strength and coverage.
The router is also equipped with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces both LAN (4xports) and WAN (1xport) interfaces deliver high speed wired connection with other Gigabit-based devices. Unlike the other two high performance Belkin N600 DB and Belkin N750 DB routers, the Belkin N450 is not designed to support the following:
- Streams stored music to devices around your home because no USB port with Video Mover app
- Wireless printing, because no USB port for shared printer
- Extended wireless coverage for larger homes
- Optimized for streaming HD video
- Optimized for wireless gaming
- Eliminates interference with simultaneous dual-band 2.4GHz & 5GHz networks
- Prioritizes network traffic (QOS)
Trendnet introduced TEW-691GR last year, the first router with N450 technology. D-Link also introduced DIR-665 selectable dual band. This router is not designed for simultaneous so actually it works in single band in a time. The table below shows comparison routers, Belkin N450, Trendnet TEW-691GR and DIR-665.
Frequency Bands
Both Belkin N450 and TEW-691GR N450 are single 2.4GHz band routers, while D-Link DIR-665 is a selectable dual band. DIR-665 is actually a single band router because it works in a single band in a time. With single band routers, you cannot connect all wireless clients with mix operating bands. If you have mix wireless clients, you better choose the router with simultaneous bands such as Linksys E4200 N750 router and WZR-HP-AG300H N600 dual band routers.
Interfaces
All the three routers support Gigabit Ethernet ports for both LAN (4xports) and WAN (1xport) interfaces. Both Belkin N450 and TEW-691GR routers do not support USB port, but DIR-665 includes one USB port. Unfortunately this USB port is used for wireless setting using WCN (Windows Connect Now), you cannot host it for shared storage or printer.
Antennas
Belkin N450 is powered by 3x internal antennas with Multi-beam technology. It’s like a three-spatial data stream which is adopted by both TEW-691GR and DIR-665 but they are external antennas with 3×3 MIMO antenna technology.
USB Port
Only D-Link DIR-665 supports one USB port but it’s not designed for hosting a shared storage or printer. The port is used for setting up the wireless clients using Windows Connect Now (WCN) for clients that do not support Wireless Protected Setup (WPS). The three routers support WPS feature for easy client (with WPS enabled) connection by pressing the WPS button.
QoS
Belkin N450 doesn’t support the Quality of Service that provides traffic prioritization. TEW-691GR and DIR-665 routers support QoS to provide prioritization to any types of time-sensitive traffic including gaming, streaming, and VoIP. TEW-691GR supports Wi-Fi multimedia (WMM)-based QoS.
