Linksys E Series 3200 Vs 3000 Vs EA3500 Cloud Routers

New Linksys E3200 N600 router

By Ki Grinsing

Overview

When Linksys launched the second generation of E series one of them is 3200, you will see the spec on offered is not much different from Linksys 3000 first generation of E series. Then the cloud generation Linksys also introduces EA3200, is there a fundamental difference between the three routers?

Spec Comparison

To get a better spec differences (if any) between the three routers table comparison is the easiest tool to help us see the difference if any. Note the comparison table below.

Wireless technology

Regarding the wifi technology, the three routers are not much different except EA3500 is engineered with a higher speed on the 5GHz frequency band. If you still do not understand what N600 and N750 are, briefly, that the routers can operate in two bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz) simultaneously with total bandwidth of 600Mbps a combined of each band (300 +300 Mbps), while the N750 in the frequency band 5GHz speed is faster 450Mbps so the total bandwidth is 750Mbps (300 +450).

These speeds are ideal for streaming HD multimedia and fast responsive online gaming, lag free.

Compared with the Linksys 4200 which is also the N750 technology, EA3500 supports cloud while 4200 does not, but 4200 supports DLNA media server.

Gigabit Ethernets

I wonder if you put gigabit spec in the list of must be present features on your router if it is in fact just one desktop computer with ancient 10/100Mbps NIC adapter is connected to the router and is only used for internet browsing. But do not worry because the three routers are equipped with gigabit interfaces.

The next generation DOCSIS 3.0 cable infrastructure support higher speed than DOCSIS 2.0 and some types of DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem supports gigabit Ethernet port for example Surfboard SB6120 / SB6121 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. For cable services with this modem, you can take advantage of connecting the Gigabit WAN port-base router to obtain optimal data throughput between the router and modem.

Larger Coverage

All the three routers are engineered with 6 internal antennas, 3 antennas each band with enhanced smart antenna technology for high speed and larger network coverage. With 3 antennas each band, the system delivers 3 spatial data stream for higher bandwidth.

Shared Storage

Linksys EA3500, 3200 and 3000 support one USB port to let you host an external USB storage for sharing across the network in home. E3000 and E3200 do not let you host a USB printer for sharing but EA3500 does.

Guest Network

The new generations of router already support wifi network segmentations, and in almost all Linksys E and EA series generations support guest network that you can use to give you internet access to visitors without having to compromise your private system.

Cisco Connect Software

All routers include Cisco Connect Software that provides you a step-by-step wizard for managing the network including security settings, parental control and guest network. But the main difference is on EA3500 which supports new Cisco Cloud Connect software. This is a new cloud era where you can manage and control your home network via your mobile devices (Apple and Android) or any internet browser remotely.

With the above features, it seems that Linksys E3200 will be the replacement for Linksys E3000. The prices for the three routers are almost the same, so should you need to choose – the new design would be great.

A common networking diagram of the wireless router (Linksys EA4500) can be shown in the above figure. If you have many home theater with Ethernet-based ready, you can consider connecting them using Buffalo WLI-TX4-Ag300N dual band adapter or Linksys WES610N or just a single WGA600N for your XBOX xonsole.

The biggest difference I see is that Linksys/Cisco does not support the e3000 any longer. They no longer will upgrade the firmware. The shame of it all is that I have been a loyal user (this is my fifth Linksys router) and I purchased the e3000 shortly before the e3200 appeared. Yet, the support tech said I was out of luck.

  • gilad ginsber

    does it support adsl2/vdsl ???

  • Jack

It supports any types of adsl or cable modems.
