DWA-642 RangeBooster Notebook Cardbus Adapter is one of your solutions to upgrade your legacy adapter to new generation of wireless N adapter. But this adapter is now an absolute product. But it doesn’t mean that you cannot use it, yes you can use it except the vendor will not provide a firmware upgrade anymore. You better consider other D-link products such as DWA-652 Xtreme N adapter.
What this product does?
Mostly old generations of laptops or notebooks are equipped with one or two cardbus slots you can use to insert a cardbus adapter such as DWA-642 or DWA-652.
DWA-642 is based on draft wireless 802.11n and is backward compatible with 802.11g devices, but DWA-652 is based on the final version of 802.11n standard. Probably the 642 series cannot be upgraded to new firmware so that’s why it is brought to be an absolute product. Moreover, this 642 can only support up to Windows Vista and the later Windows XP SP2, Windows 2000 SP4. But DWA-652 series supports all Windows platforms.
You may connect these adapters to wide range of new generations of D-link wireless routers including most popular D-link DIR-655 and up to the newest Dir-857 N900 wireless router with USB 3.0 port.
The other solution for upgrading your notebook is by adding a wireless USB adapter, an easy way to install the adapter to either a desktop or a laptop. There are many various models of USB wireless adapter including the standard one up to the high power wireless adapters such as Alfa 2000mw high power adapter. When you need to connect to long range wifi network you may consider the high power long range wifi adapter.
The other solution for upgrading your laptops instead of adding DWA-642 or DWA-652 wireless cardbus adapter, you may also consider adding mini-PCI express wireless adapter. However, you have to do a hard work in opening the laptop case because the mini PCI slot is typically located under the laptop keyboard where it is not possible for ordinary users.
One of popular wireless mini-PCI adapter you may consider is Intel Ultimate N 633ANHMW. This is a high performance IEEE 802.11n (draft) Wi-Fi Adapter – Mini wireless PCI Express adapter delivering the speeds of up to 450Mbps ideally. Today, most wireless manufacturers introduce ultimate speed wireless routers with N900 technology which delivers double bandwidth up to 900Mbps (450Mbps each band).
D-link DWA-642 rangemax wireless cardbus adapter is an absolute product, you may consider alternate solutions including wireless USB adapter or mini PCI express adapter.
