The Trendnet TEW-691GR is the first wireless router with N450 technology delivering high speeds up to 450Mbps
When the IEEE approved the draft 802.11n to be the final version in Sep 2009, mostly networking manufacturers shipped new lines of wireless products by adopting this ratified version of the 802.11n standards. Belkin with its lines of new product including Belkin Surf, Share, Play and Max Play adopt this new standard. Linksys with its lines of previous E Series including E3000, E2000 and E1000 also adopt this ratified version. They are designed with new 802.11n technology delivering high speeds of up to 300Mbps. But Trendnet jumped one more step ahead by introducing new TEW-691GR with N450 technology.
What this Product Does
TEW-691GR is a new wireless gigabit router with N450 technology delivering the high speeds of up to 450Mbps in 2.4GHz band. The router is powered by the smart antenna MIMO technology with three spatial data streaming for delivering high speeds and longer distance coverage. This is ideal solution for streaming High Definition video streaming up to 1080px smoothly, jitter-free and lag-free.
Unfortunately the router doesn’t support the dual band for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. The router can only operate in 2.4GHz band – a band which is more crowded than 5GHz band which is relatively clean band. Streaming HD media using 5GHz band is more reliable and less interference than using 2.4GHz band.
Compared to today’s new wireless routers which are designed with N750 technology, you probably choose the dual band routers to support both of your mix wireless adapters either in 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. N750 routers can support both types of wireless clients which operate either in 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands concurrently delivering the high speeds of up to 450Mbps (same as those N450 routers) in 5GHz band and up to 300Mbps in 2.4GHz band. For example you can see new Linksys E4200 series with N750 technology, or you can also see Netgear WNDR4000 N750 wireless routers.
The TEW-691GR supports 4xGigabit Ethernet LAN ports for high speed wired connection to any types of computers with NIC adapters up to gigabit speed using the Cat5e UTP cable. The router includes one Gigabit Ethernet port for high speed connection to the gigabit Ethernet modem for optimum data throughput between the router and the modem eliminating bottleneck issues.
If you have any types of XBOX console or Blu-Ray player, Trendnet also introduces TEW-687GA 450Mbps Wireless N Gaming Adapter you can connect to the TEW-691GR for maximum data rate throughput. You can easily connect the device by just pressing the WPS button for easy and simple secured connection.
The router supports the VPN pass through for IPSec, L2TP, and PPTP protocols. Like other home wireless routers, the router doesn’t support native VPN but passing all types of VPN protocols. Should you need wireless router for small businesses you can consider Cisco RV 120W Wireless VPN Router which includes native VPN server rather than VPN pass through feature.
Networking Solution
You can connect the TEW-691GR N450 router to wide range of broadband modem including DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem that support gigabit port such as Surfboard SBG6120 cable modem. You can change the router configuration any time by typing the default IP address of the router 192.168.10.1 (if you don’t change the default yet) using your internet browsers. The default user-name is “admin” and password is blank.

Pros:
- High speeds up to 450Mbps
- Gigabit Ethernet speeds both LAN and WAN interfaces
- Easy to install and configuration
Cons:
- Supports only single band 2.4GHz
- Doesn’t support Guest network for secure public access
- Doesn’t support USB port for either shared storage or printer
Trendnet with TEW-691GR is the first wireless router that supports the highest speed with N450 technology. For TRENDnet wireless router with simultaneous dual-band you can consider TEW-672 Gigabit wireless –n router.
