When you sign-up a broadband Internet connection from your ISP, the network device the ISP supply (rent) to you is a simple modem-router which usually has one USB port and one or four RJ-45 LAN port. With this simple available modem-router, you can build a simple wired LAN with two computers or up to 5 computers (with 4 LAN ports modem-router). With this simple wired network, if you would like to extend the network wirelessly – you need to add a wireless access point. Linksys introduces WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point that extends your wired network wirelessly to some computers at home or at the office.

What this product does

The WAP54G Linksys Wireless-G access point lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g ) or Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to your network. Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow. It’s easy to grow your network by adding computers, printers and other wireless devices, without stringing cables. WAP54G is also compatible with Wireless-B devices. Reliable connectivity allows you to move your laptops, or set up your devices all around your home or office. Or add Access Points to two separate networks and create “cable-less cable” connectivity between them.

Easy Configuration

WAP54G Linksys Wireless-G access point with Push-button setup makes it simple to add devices to your new wireless network. Push the button on the Access Point and on any SecureEasySetup – enabled device to automatically create the wireless connection. Device and security configuration is a snap with the Browser-based configuration utility.

To access the web-based utility of the Access Point, you need to connect the WAP54G Wireless access point to a PC and configure the TCP/IP with the static IP address such as 192.168.1.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0, before you launch your web browser. In the Address field, enter the Access Point’s default IP address, 192.168.1.245, or the IP address you entered during the Setup Wizard. (Should you need to learn what IP address the Access Point presently uses, run the Setup Wizard again. It will scan the Access Point and give you its IP address.) Press Enter. The login screen will appear. Leave the User Name field blank. The first time you open the Web-based Utility, use the default password, admin. (You can set a new password from the Administration > Management screen.) Then click OK. You can configure the rest of the configuration appropriately. See also setting up wireless routers.

The above diagram is a simple configuration of the WAP54G wireless access point which extending the network from a simple cable modem-router (commonly supplied by the ISP). You can connect the RJ-45 LAN port of the cable modem-router to the LAN port of the WAP54G wireless access point. you still can utilize the USB port of the modem-router as a direct connection to the computer.

How secure

WAP54G Linksys Wireless-G access point supports the Wi-fi Protected Access (WPA) to secure the wireless connection and also Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) for legacy clients that do not supports WPA. It also supports MAC filter and SSID broadcast enable / disable control.
