Netgear introduces many types of Wireless DSL modem – an all-in-one device which integrates the function of router and DSL modem into a single device.
Broadband DSL internet is so popular besides the cable broadband services that mostly deploy in home premises or small offices. Small businesses that demand high bandwidth can sign-up multiple broadband internet services from different ISPs to feed to the router with multi-WAN connection for load balancing. Subscribing multiple broadband internets is cheaper than T1 if the requirement of affordable high bandwidth is required by small businesses. Home users that require a simple wireless network in home with DSL services, they can install an all-in-one wireless DSL modem.
Why Wireless DSL Modem?
An all-in-one wireless DSL modem is a single device that integrates all the requirements in building a wireless network in home or small offices for sharing the DSL broadband internet connection with many computers within the household. Sharing the DSL broadband internet requires the DSL modem, the router with firewall features, the switch and the wireless access point device. Netgear introduces many types of wireless DSL modem you can consider for your wireless network in home.
DSL modem is the first requirement when you require a DSL broadband internet services. This is the first CPE (customer premises equipment) that is installed in home / subscriber as an interface to the provider.
The router with the firewall feature is the second requirement you need. The router with firewall (NAT and SPI) feature helps protect your private / internal network against any types of internet threats. The NAT (Network address translation) helps your private network hidden from the public internet. The NAT is a concept of mapping the private IP addresses inside your private network to a single IP public from the ISP. Therefore the router with NAT feature lets you share a single internet connection with many computers within your internal network. Modem only (without the routing / NAT function) cannot be used to share the internet unless you connect it to a (wireless) router. The router typically includes one or more Ethernet ports for wired connection.
The last device you require is a wireless access point to let you provide wireless access for computers and other wireless clients to connect wirelessly to the network.
All of these devices are integrated into a single device – A wireless DSL modem. Netgear so far introduces some products you can consider for your home wireless network in a simple way and easy to install and manage.
The figure 1 shows a wireless networking diagram that uses Netgear Wireless DSL modem as the center of the network. RJ-11 port connects to the phone line directly or uses a splitter to split the line with modem and the telephone handset. DSL broadband internet and the voice can work concurrently without interfering each other.

With your XBOX console, you can add an XBOX wireless adapter to connect wirelessly to the network or you can use wireless bridge with multiple Ethernet port to allow you connect multiple home theater devices to the network.
DGN2200 N300 Wireless DSL Modem Router
This is the wireless DSL modem which is powered by the wireless N300 delivering the high speed up to 300Mbps in a single band 2.4GHz. This is an ideal solution for “work and play” wireless network in home. The DGN2200 wireless DSL modem is compatible with major DSL ISPs. You can create the wireless network easily to allow you share the broadband internet connection, share documents, read email and other simple networking tasks. With the speeds of up to 300Mbps you can play online games wirelessly with your XBOX console.
The good thing with this wireless DSL modem is that it includes a USB port with ReadyShare technology to allow you share an external storage across the network. Other important features are the advanced Quality of Service (QoS), free Live Parental Control and secure Guest access.
Pros:
- High speed
- Include one USB port for shared storage
- Guest network
Cons:
- Doesn’t support dual band
- Doesn’t support gigabit port
- The USB port cannot be used for shared printer
The similar model with this DGN2200 is DGND3500 N300 wireless DSL modem router. The main different is on the Ethernet ports. DGN2200 supports fast 10/100 Ethernet ports but DGND3500 supports gigabit Ethernet ports.
DGND3300 Wireless DSL Modem
The DGND3300 Wireless DSL Range-Max is a high performance simultaneous dual band wireless –N router with built-in DSL modem. Powered by the latest wireless N600 technology and with 8 internal smart antenna MIMO technology, the router delivers the high speeds up to 300Mbps each band.
Like DGN2200, this DGND3300 supports one USB port for shared storage, but you cannot use it to host a printer. The device includes gigabit Ethernet ports for high speed data rate transfer. To help conserve the energy, the device is designed with eco-friendly technology including the on/off button for energy saving when not in use, energy star compliant and recycled packaging material.
Pros:
- N600 technology doubles your bandwidth
- Support Gigabit ports
- Guest network access
- USB port for shared storage
Cons:
- USB cannot be used for shared printer
- Some customers provide 1 star (out of 5 stars excellent reviews) but averagely nearly 4 star customer reviews for ease of setup / use, works as advertised and supports Linux and open-source

DGND3700 N600 Wireless DSL Modem
This is an upcoming product; up to Jun 2011 the product is not available yet in the stores. The DGND3700 N600 is powered by 802.11n with simultaneous dual band technology delivering the high speeds up to 300Mbps each band. The device is powered by powerful dual-core processor. Unlike the other DSL modem, this device is designed differently. It includes one gigabit WAN port for Cable broadband modem connection. It’s a good idea should you change services from DSL to Cable, but I think this feature is less value except if both DSL and Cable connection can work as load balancing or fail-over.
The DGND3700 supports one USB port to let you share USB storage across the network. The USB port with Ready-Share technology supports DLNA media server to let stream multimedia to home theater devices.
Pros:
- High speed N600 technology – doubles your bandwidth
- Supports gigabit Ethernet ports
- Guest network
- Full power – duo core processor
Cons:
- USB port cannot host shared printer
- Supports DSL and Cable connection but cannot be used for load balancing or fail-over
