Old Generation Linksys WRT310N Vs New Generation Linksys E2500 Series

Linksys WRT310N is an old generation of wireless N (draft) router with the following main features:

  • Powered by draft 802.11n single band 2.4Ghz
  • 4xGigabit LAN Switch
  • 3xinternal MIMO antenna for faster and larger network coverage

When the first time wireless draft 802.11n standard was adopted to any wireless routers at that time, you felt significant speed increase when you migrated from legacy wireless G 54Mbps router to draft 802.11n router. Two or three years later, the new introductions of ultimate speed N900 routers are introduced into the market – the wireless routers with blazing speed up to 450Mbps each band concurrently doubling the bandwidth up to 900Mbps both bands (2.4GHz and 5Ghz).

Should you upgrade your aging Linksys WRT310n to the new generations of E series, which one you should choose? Knowing upgrading to the latest N900 router (such as Wndr4500 N900 router) is still costly, upgrading to Linksys E2500 series would be appropriate. What advantages you would get with this E2500 series?

To better understand the advantages upgrading Wrt310N to new Linksys E2500 series, the following tables show main features comparison between Wrt310N Vs E2500 series in brief descriptions.

Linksys WRT310n The first feature difference is the wireless technology. Linksys Wrt310N is still powered by draft 802.11n standard, but the new Linksys E2500 series is powered by final 802.11n standard. And the significant difference regarding the wireless technology is the simultaneous dual band feature Linksys E2500 supports. With dual band N600, your network delivers the speed of up to 300Mbps each band concurrently. N600 router assures operational with mix wireless clients on your network that work either in 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band. More internal antennas in Linksys E2500 delivers faster and longer distance coverage.

Unfortunately, upgrading to Linksys E2500 you will drop the speed of your 4xLAN switch from gigabit speed to 10/100Mbps speed. If gigabit wired speed does mater for you, you should not upgrade to E2500 router. Linksys E3200 N600 would be a better choice, but off course more money to spend. But it’s worth knowing more features on E3200 with USB port for share storage and Gigabit ports on both LAN and WAN ports.

The other feature you can benefit from Linksys E2500 is the guest network supports to let you create separate security boundary for your visitors for internet access only.
