D-Link Dir-655 is very popular with its solid connection and it becomes top 5 best seller products in networking product category together with Medialink N150 wireless router. D-Link introduces some Amplify wireless routers including HD media routers (Dir-657 and Dir-827), Dap-1525 Wi-Fi booster and Dir-645 whole home router. What I like to discuss here is the comparison between the Dir-645 Vs Dir-655 which looks slightly different if you read the serial number. Both routers are optimized for gaming wit solid wireless connectivity.
Wireless Technology
Originally the D-Link Dir-655 was powered by draft 802.11n standard, backward compatible with 802.11b/g based devices. And the newer hardware versions use 802.11n standard and shareport technology (hardware versions A2, A3, A4 and B1) that supports share printer. Dir-655 is equipped with 3 external antennas. Dir-645 doesn’t support 802.11b based devices anymore, I think it makes sense because 802.11b is legacy standard and probably you do not use it anymore.
Unlike Dir-655 with 3x external antennas, Dir-645 is powered by 6 element beam forming antenna with smart beam antenna technology where focused beams of bandwidth is sent to each of wireless devices simultaneously for solid wireless connection. Many wireless routers adopt this smart beam technology including new D-Link Amplify routers. QoS for bandwidth prioritization provides your devices the bandwidth they require for seamless HD media streaming and fast responsive gaming.
Interfaces
Gigabit interfaces for the router is common today particularly the routers that are designed to drive high speed applications including streaming, voice and gaming. Since both routers are designed to support multimedia applications, they include Gigabit Ethernet ports on their LAN and WAN interfaces. There are few DOCSIS 3.0 cable modems with gigabit Ethernet port you can use to connect to the Gigabit WAN port of the router for maximum throughput such as Surfboard SB6120 or 6120.
USB 2.0 port is also embedded on each of the router with shareport technology to let you attach an external disk storage or printer to be accessible by users on the network. Dir-645 support built-in media server with DLNA compliant to let your home theater devices (with DLNA compliant) connect seamlessly.
Security features are the same for both routers including WPA/WPA2, dual firewall features and VPN pass through. But remember as mentioned earlier that Dir-645 doesn’t support 802.11b devices, so that’s why it doesn’t support WEP security encryption anymore. Should you purchase this router, make sure you do not use 802.11b based devices unless they cannot connect to the router with security enable.
The table shows spec comparison between D-Link Dir-655 and Dir-645.
